conditions of entry
1. Eligibility for entry
1.1 All types, forms and sizes of artworks in all materials are eligible for entry in Kilometre of Sculpture (kmS). The exhibition site can accommodate the largest to the smallest works.
1.2 However, artists are required to consider safety, ease of installation and removal, the environment and the ability of their work to withstand the weather, and the fact that some visitors may not be used to seeing art exhibited in the public space and may respond in unpredictable ways.
2. Multiple applications
2.1 Artists can submit more than one idea or artwork for consideration, but should do so using a separate application form for each submission complete with supporting information and images.
2.2 The curatorial team WILL NOT consider applications that have multiple ideas or artworks as this would in effect require them to complete the submission for the artist.
3. Grants and subsidies
3.1 kmS will provide a small fee to its artists and they are then free to decide how best to use this in their project.
3.2 kmS will also do what it can to provide any equipment the artists may need as part of their work or in its installation and de-installation.
3.3 Once selected artists are requested to apply to national sources of support in their home country to cover the costs of transport, travel and accommodation. If this is impossible or the organization rejects their application, kmS will do what it can to meet this shortfall.
3.4 As soon as the full budget for kmS is known (mid to late spring), then kmS may be able to pay for any extra expenses the artists may have that is thus far not covered.
4. Site selection
4.1 Artists in the open call are requested to propose three sites for their work by marking and describing their preferred sites, in order of preference on the exhibition map. For artists unfamiliar with the exhibition site, please describe the type of site or landscape you would prefer.
4.2 Following a meeting between the Site Manager and the Municipal Engineer, some artists may be required to provide additional information, which in some cases may include engineering reports prior to their work being approved.
5. Transportation to and from the site
5.1 Artists are responsible for the transportation of their artworks, including international freight to and from the exhibition site and for arranging the removal of all packaging materials from the site.
5.2 kmS will once again do what it can to arrange support for artists delivering work from abroad, and so the artist should make sure they describe their transportation needs clearly in their application form.
6. Installing and removing the artworks
6.1 Artists will install their works during the week immediately prior to the opening of the exhibition and the exact instructions and timing of the installing process will be agreed upon between the artist and the Site Manager.
6.2 The kmS technical team, led by the Site Manager, will assist artists with access to the site as well as equipment and technical expertise as necessary during the process of installing the artworks.
6.3 It is a condition of exhibiting that all selected artists provide a written statement as part of their application form on how they propose to install and de-install their sculptures, together with a list of all vehicles and heavy equipment they require on the site.
7. Artists exhibit at their own risk
7.1 The exhibition does not have an accidental and malicious damage insurance policy to cover the artworks on display.
7.2 All risk in the exhibition of artworks remains with the artist at all times, irrespective of whether the work is being handled by a member of the exhibition staff.
7.3 By signing the application form and exhibition contract, artists authorise the exhibition staff to move their work or remove it completely from the site for any reason, including but not limited to public safety, damage or potential damage to the sculpture or for the cohesive curation of the exhibition.
7.4 Over the period of the exhibition, daytime Site Crew and kmS volunteers will patrol the exhibition site. To minimise minor acts of vandalism, smaller artworks that are readily movable may be placed in secure storage facilities on the exhibition site each night and placed back on display each morning.
8. Use of images of the work, Copyright and IP
8.1 Artists’ sponsors are not authorised to use images of the sculpture taken at the exhibition for commercial purposes, including commercial websites without entering into a licence agreement with the expressed written consent of Kilometre of Sculpture.
8.2 Kilometre of Sculpture has the right to reproduce images of the works to be exhibited provided by the artist for pre-selection and any images of the work in the exhibition for an exhibition catalogue (should there be one), publicity, advertising or archival purposes in any manner connected with the exhibition or its sponsors.
